New Year Resolutions are too mainstream and their failure is almost written in stone.
My $0.02:
If you want to be successful at your new year resolution, start acting on it TODAY and spend the next month leaving no stone unturned in completing your task. Also, make a note everytime you skip your task.
This way by the time the new year arrives, you will know whether you actually want to go through with the said activity or not. And if you do decide to continue, you will have a proper bunch of reasons (from the notes you made) about why you skip your activity and can use this to implement a better plan of action. This way your new year resolution will be 'Continue going to the gym' instead of 'Join the Gym'
The new year brings with it new found enthusiasm to start new things, but it is more sensible to use that enthusiasm at the harder part of any activity: the follow through. It is much easier to sign up for the gym than it is keep going 5 days a week.
Bottomline: Start on your new year resolution today, learn from your mistakes for one whole month and use the cheer of the new year to solidify a new habit.
