Gamification of Bitch work


Jobs come in all shape and sizes, some are exciting, some are well paying, some are challenging and some downright boring. Unless you’re a CEO with a full time secretary who does all your boring stuff for you, there will be parts of your job/life that are irritating, thoroughly non-stimulating but still have to be done.
Eg: Formatting a word doc, checking it for typos, uploading and filing your expenses, etc.

How do you escape from this misery of small boring tasks getting in your way and preventing you from changing the world?
Get a secretary/valet: If you could, you wouldn’t be reading this.
Get the software that does this for you: You could use the latest fancy software that automates most of your bitch and live peacefully but there are two caveats to this. Software isn’t free and computers can do a lot but they can’t do everything (yet).
But humans can.
And humans are!
People are spending increasingly larger parts of their lifetimes playing games and surfing and socializing online. As phones become cheaper and more ubiquitous, the amount of time people waste doing something stupid on their devices is only going to get larger. 
So how is this connected to helping you reduce bitch work? It is . .
These teeming masses present a giant opportunity to get stuff done.
They offer you chance to turn nobody’s problem into everybody’s problem.
If you have a boring task that no one wants to do, gamify it and make everyone do it. 
Two examples follow:
ReCaptcha
Researchers wanted to digitize ancient books and preserve them and also make them available to the masses.
Simple task, 2 steps: 
       1. Take hi-res photos of each page of the book
       2. Get the text out of the photos and reconstruct the whole book.
Step 1 can automated to a certain extent, you can build a machine that goes through the book page by page and snaps photos. Only useful if the book isn’t in a delicate condition.
Step 2 can also be automated. OCR techniques are pretty powerful and can easily identify characters. But these ancient texts offer a couple of unique challenges:
1. Most of them we’re written by hand and due to different writing styles, standard pattern matching doesn’t work as effectively as it does otherwise.
2. In many cases, the paper has worn out and the writing is barely legible
So the onus falls on the humble human to look at page after page of ancient text and type out what is written on the page. A task that is incredibly boring (unless you’re looking at kamasutra!) and will take eons of time to complete (given the number of texts that are waiting to be digitized)
So whats the way the out of this?
We can upload all the photos on a website and ask people the world over to come and transcribe the texts for us, we could also give them badges for completing a certain number of words and make a leaderboard so people can compete. This will attract a few thousand people but they’ll most likely be history buffs, the kind of people who would’ve done this stuff for free anyway.
How do we get the rest of the world to do this, maybe drop in a few million dollars and pay people to do it. But how much will you pay!
And no one will want to want to say that he tries to make sense of fuzzy words for a living.
How do we get millions of people to look at fuzzy words and make sense of them?
Heard of CAPTCHA’s? They’re these images websites use to make sure you’re human. Identifying accurately the words from a fuzzy image is still considered a surefire way to ascertaining the fact the you’re a human (or that you’re a computer program that’s equally smart by the Turing test )
Eureka moment! On one side you have this vast pool of words from ancient texts waiting to recognized and on the other side you have this huge bunch of humans trying to prove that their actually human so that they can successfully create profiles on dating sites and finally get laid! :D
ReCaptcha wonderfully connects these two, everytime some website wants to serve a CAPTCHA instead of generating a fuzzy image, it instead shows one from ReCaptcha’s database of images.

Phylo
To find out what mutations occurred that caused a separation of species researchers have to sit and painstakingly align huge sequences of DNA. Another boring task. So the researchers at the McGill University in Canada created a game out of this whole process. In Phylo, players get points get points for aligning coloured blocks and minimize mismatches. Not something that thoroughly entertaining but a good example of the process of gamifying bitch work.
Take a boring task, map it to an interesting front end which like playing/using, get the boring task done.
This presents an interesting new paradigm for gaming and a different way for gaming companies to make money.
Gaming can be done with a purpose and at least people can be tricked in to doing productive/meaningful stuff as a part of the game. Imagine a day when big universities pay gaming companies to insert such puzzles into their game (instead of burdening researchers with such work) or a day when Gaming companies stop asking you to pay for upgrades but instead make you solve more puzzles or do other task to earn those upgrades (WIN-WIN-WIN situation:You get the upgrade, Gaming company gets paid for getting the task done, University gets the boring part of the research finished).
Imagine a day when you want to file some bills, you’ve got photos of each bill but now you have to pore over each to extract the payment location, date, items, etc. Tedious boring work. Now imagine if you drop this task into a game like SimCity where people will digitize those bills as a part of them game! They get more points, you get fully digitized bills and the gaming company gets more engagement.
I think these ideas are but the tip of the iceberg in getting humanity to solve its own problems using massive distributed computing resources.

Drawback : Doesnt work on sites which dont support secure browsing.But Facebook and Google support it, so WTH.

The Age of The Pirate

The Internet is changing the game.Change with it.


Just finished watching 'Steal This Film' -parts I and II. They're documentaries about the Pirate Bay and the movement to free information and change the view on intellectual property. They're free for download by the way!

It was very enlightening to hear that when recorded music initially came musicians were very sceptical about it.
As it happens, musicians at that time made money primarily by performing live and they felt that if people could have/listen to the music at home they wouldnt show up for their concerts.
Yeah thats exactly what happened!
Then cassete purchases exploded,the Walkman came and recorded music came to accepted as way to reach out to millions more people than you could on an typical concert tour.It became an alternate revenue stream and musicians continued to make money.

What happened?
New Technology, initially perceived as a threat became a whole new medium.
Technology didnt rob any musicians, it just changed the way they made money.
Technology didn't change the profits ,it changed the profit model.

It wouldn't be difficult to argue that something similar is happening to Music, Movies and Television today
The internet is allowing you to access any content you want for absolutely free (albeit illegally!).
Some say this is a crime and we're robbing the producers. I completely disagree.
The people who keep screaming that piracy is a crime are mostly those whose incomes are directly related to the record sales. They've become comfortable to certain modus operandi in their business and they see new technology as violating their rules. Well my friends,the game has changed and you better change with it.

Musicians dont make music just to earn money. New Technology doesn't break the rules, it changes the game.

The Time for Linux is now

Windows is the worlds most popular operating system

Linux is the world's most popular free operating system
The creators of Linux do not see the word free as in freebie but free as in freedom.Linux is built on the principle that if its your computer, you can do goddamn whatever you wish to do with it.


Linux started out as an alternative to UNIX(the dominant OS at that time) and initially found usage among computer savvy crowd. But Linux today is far from the geeky and difficult to fathom thing that you may imagine.

Linux Today
Today,Linux distributions look good and work great.They come with well designed interfaces that get the learning curve out of the way and even people who've used Windows all their life rarely have  much of a problem(Though software interfaces on Windows are still years ahead). Some Linux distributions are built  specifically with the purpose of working out of the box (Think LinuxMint) unlike Windows which requires you to install a hundred things before you safely start working.
There's way too much wicked shit to do to your PC in Linux
Some people have a difficulty coping with software installation process on Linux (Seriously,nothing beats exe's and press 'OK to Continue' ) but I've settled on Ubuntu after switching quite a few distributions and find that efforts like the 'Ubuntu Software Center' are a big step in the right direction.




Whats the problem?
Linux works faster,hangs less and has to deal with less viruses than Windows. So then why would anyone ever use Windows? Because  Windows just shows up on your computer uninvited and people just don't bother switching an OS.

Looking Ahead

But today there is an opportunity for Linux to change this scenario.
Slowly but surely computing is moving over to the cloud and more and more of our time is spent on network based applications.We can watch movies online,listen to songs online,draw pictures online and do many more things that were once restricted to the desktop.

The latest version of HTML(the internet's underlying language), HTML5 gives developers fascinating new opportunities to move traditional desktop based applications into a browser-based environment. Google (through Google Docs) has tried to implement a complete office suite within a browser and has done a fantastic job of it.
As more and more applications become browser/network-based, the role of the Operating System for most users will become secondary. Google tried a radical approach to this when it launched its Chrome WebOS.(I call it radical because you to be log in with your Google Account to use the OS).
But this demonstrates that there many people who believe the OS as we see it today is in for a change.And what better replacement than the OS that was and is being built by people sharing code over the Internet.

Also happening

Another trend that we may observe is the divergence of the computer market (triggered especially by the rise of netbooks and tablets).
Want a device to just read books along with some music, then tablets it is.
If your computer activity is restricted to simply browsing the web,coupled with some movie watching and office work, then go for a netbook.
If you're into gaming, then you'd choose a laptop with a decent graphic card
 . . .and so on.

Each of these market segments requires a different kind of OS and at least the first two are goldmines for Linux. All that is needed is a consolidated effort to convince device manufacturers into switching and then there'll be no looking back. Think this kind of an effort is too extreme, you couldn't be more wrong. Have you heard of Android !?
Device manufacturers had no shame in switching as long they were assured that the OS that were switching to was well supported and that there was loads of software to go around.And there was the added bonus of getting a completely-built modern OS for FREE.

Linux is already well-supported
Linux already has loads of software to go around.
In case you forgot, Linux is FREE.
Bottomline
So,summarizing I would like to say that the rise of internet-based applications and the amazing community support and software base that Linux enjoys havent made a more compelling argument for OEM's to switch to Linux as their default OS and Linux evangelists need to grab this opportunity.

Researchers turn USB cable into attack tool


This article talks about a new security exploit computers which uses an (Oh-theyre-everyhhwere) USB device to gain access to a computer.A university professor and his student from George Mason university modified a Android to 'take control' of a computer.What they basically did was alter the device drivers/device ID of the phone so that it was recognised by the computer as an HID(Human Interface Device) or in simple terms .. a keyboard.Since the device was now recognised as a normal keyboard ,they could now use it as a normal keyboard!The basic premise of the attack is that the USB protocol doesn't require any authentication of connecting devices.I don't know how this is termed as 'exploit' because this very technique (of making one device get recognised as another) is widely used by Electronics hobbyists to control electronic devices using their PC's.Also, as noted by commenter's on the post(the post has some really funny comments BTW ) ;if you're close enough to plug in your phone (which is then recognised as keyboard ) ,you might as well use the attached keyboard!
The Ultimate Anti-Virus
However, a possible scenario where this could be security threat would be if the attackers made a small chip that gets recognised as a keyboard and communicated with that chip wirelessly.(Still requires you to ignore an unknown small thing stuck in your USB port!)

File Management for Smart (or Lazy) people

As hard drives have become cheaper and bigger , people today find themselves suddenly sitting on a mountain of files which are are organized in a vague or confusing manner.

And just when you need that one particular file or document , you just can’t seem to remember its name , So ‘searching’ for becomes useless.

One way to prevent such situations from occurring is to use File Tagging .
The traditional way to store files in an orderly fashion would be to adopt Hierarchical folder based on a fixed methodology

For example, say you wanted to sort your Movie collection , your folders would look something like this:

Movies > (Comedy , Thriller , Action, Drama, etc.)
and inside Action > ( Robots , Racing , Martial arts , etc)

Such an organization scheme is very Linear and relies on single organizing method (in this case ‘Movie Genre’). Sure you could go ahead and create sub-folders for other attributes like release year( Eg: Martial arts >(2008 , 2009 ,2010) ) but the main method of organization would still be genre.Also, try to imagine the time and effort that would go into conceptualizing and creating such a system as the number of attributes increased  .
Apart from this , say you wanted to access all movies released in 2008 from your collection , you would have to go through each sub-folder and open the ‘2008’ folder.

Looks like my movie collection is deep trouble , here comes file tagging software to the rescue .

File – tagging allows you to do the following really useful things:
Assign MULTIPLE tags to a given file
Write small rules/scripts  to AUTOMATICALLY ASSIGN TAGS to certain files

Lets go back to the Movie example and see how this makes life easy:

Since we’re not using a folder based approach , you could just go ahead and dump all your Movies in one big ‘Movie” folder.
The next step is to tag files according to whichever attributes you feel important
For example, tags for The Karate Kid :(Action, Martial Arts , 2010, Jackie Chan)
Now the next time you want to view Movies from 2010 , just access the tag 2010 , much simpler than before. Here the multiple tags serve as multiple sorting methods for your movie files

The next and more awesome step would be to let your files tag themselves. Movie files are commonly named in the following manner TheKarateKid[2010]DVDriP.Xvid-XOR.avi
If your file tagging software could automatically figure out the release year from the file name( with some scripting from you of course!) , it would save you a lot of trouble .

Till now i was talking about organizing your Movie folder , well you don't even need to create a movie folder , just create a huge folder for all your files and tag all your movie files with ‘Movies’ !!

Say you’re working on a project with files scattered all across your file-system(across multiple drives or possibly across a network) . You can avoid the need to create something like a Project folder with all your required files copied into it by just tagging  your required files with ‘Project’. This will save both time and drive space.

There a quite a few file-tagging software's available , two noteworthy applications are Tabbles and TaggedFrog.

Tabbles has demo version allowing you to tag up to 1000 files while TaggedFrog is  free.

What i really wonder is why such file-tagging features aren't available on major operating systems (notable exception is Ubuntu Linux which has some projects which use ExT3 file-systems attributes to create tags.)
